Oprah
I tivo Oprah everyday just in case she has something really great that I need to see. Well last night even my husband wanted to watch because she did her show with the guy who did Food Inc. We still haven't seen it, but it's coming up on Netflix. We were eating dinner while we watched and both literally put the fork down, jaws dropped when they started talking about the chickens. Shocking. D and I have tried to be very conscious about the food we eat, and I think we do pretty well, but after watching last night, I know we can do better. The most profound thing he talked about was how as the price of food has dropped, the price of health care has risen. The last part of the show was devoted to interviewing Alicia Silverstone about her new book, The Kind Diet. I am definitely going to get the book and try some of the recipes. Going vegan seems very out of reach, but I'm open to hearing more and her whole message seemed very approachable, and the food looked great! Has anyone tried it?

Jessica, I became a vegetarian after watching this video called "Meet Your Meat". I see there is a new one called "Glass Walls" that I am going to watch now.

Michael Pollan (co writer of Food Inc.) is super and I love his books. Check this one out when you have time:

thanks shelly I will check it out. I have thought about becoming a vegetarian a million times. I eat meat a lot less than I used to, I may just have to cut it out. We grilled a chicken breast last night and I'm not kidding when I say it was MUTANT, it prob weighed 3 lbs. gross.
ReplyDeleteLadies, I was vegan and vegetarian at different points in my life. I'm back to eating some red meat now, but only from grass fed, locally raised, roaming cows.
ReplyDeleteIt's important to remember that not ALL meat and poultry are handled as inhumanely as what you saw those videos, nor are they all that sick. I get my beef from local farmers who sell their product at the farmer's market. I call them "happy" cows.
Cows from feedlots are not happy. Nor healthy.
If you know exactly where your meat comes from, how it's treated, and what it eats, you may feel a whole lot better about eating it. I know I do.
